                                             Welcome to my class!

Scroll, Spinning

Mrs. Howell's high school (9-12) resource room focuses on extra help in Reading and Language Arts, although we explore most classroom subjects in this room. Students are able to learn according to their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in a structured, beneficial environment. Classroom Activities include preparing for the State Graduation Exam, modifying lessons in the student's regular classrooms to fit the needs of the students and making learning fun and easy. Each week, we vote for a Class Superstar depending on which student we feel made a difference that week.

MAJOR Classroom Assignments:
  • Footprints on the World-Trace an outline of both feet, then in the space provided, write an essay based on what "footprint" you would like to make on the world in your lifetime.
  • Flowers for Algernon Unit-This is a ten day unit in which we read the short story "Flowers for Algernon" and complete various activities including a Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt, and your own recreation of the Rorscharch test.

The Improving Education Results for Children with Disabilities Act, which reforms the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), contains many positives for students with disabilities. However, two areas in which the bill is disappointing are its mandates for highly qualified teachers and the lack of full funding provisions. The bill was signed into law on Dec. 3, 2005. It is expected that proposed regulations will be released in the spring and final regulations are anticipated in a year. ICouncil for Exceptional Children, 2006, accessed March 27, 2006 from,
